Crete Guide

Kissamos – A Town Full of Life

Kissamos, also known as Kastelli, is the heart of western Crete – a lively seaside town that combines authentic Cretan charm with everything you might need during your stay.

Stroll along the seafront promenade, where tavernas and cafés line the beach, offering fresh fish, traditional meze, and beautiful sunset views. In the summer, the town comes alive with festivals and village feasts, filled with music, dance, and local wine – a chance to experience true Cretan hospitality.

Kissamos is not just about leisure – it also provides all the essentials for a comfortable holiday. Here you will find supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, shops, and even a health center, making it the perfect base for exploring the area without missing any conveniences.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed evening by the sea, a taste of local life at a summer panigiri, or simply a place where you can find everything you need, Kissamos has it all.

Chania – Old Town & Venetian Harbor

Chania is often called the most beautiful city in Crete – and for good reason. Its Old Town is a maze of narrow alleys, colorful Venetian houses, hidden courtyards, and small boutiques that invite you to wander and explore at your own pace.

At the heart of the city lies the Venetian Harbor, with its iconic lighthouse, lively cafés, and seaside restaurants. Day or night, it’s the perfect place for a stroll, a romantic dinner, or simply to watch the sun set over the sea.

The charm of Chania comes from its blend of cultures – Venetian, Ottoman, and Cretan influences all visible in the architecture, cuisine, and atmosphere. Walking through its streets feels like stepping back in time, while still enjoying the vibrant energy of a modern city.

Whether you’re looking for history, shopping, nightlife, or just a magical setting by the sea, Chania Old Town and its harbor are not to be missed.

Culture & History

Crete is not only about stunning beaches and wild nature – it also has a rich history and deep traditions. During your stay, we recommend visiting some of the following archaeological sites, museums, and monasteries:

Archaeological Museum of Chania
Located in the heart of the old town, this museum showcases finds from the Minoan period up to Roman times, offering a journey through the island’s fascinating past.

Olive and Oil Museum
A small but authentic museum dedicated to the history of olive cultivation and traditional oil production – an important part of Cretan life and culture.

Ancient Falassarna
Near the famous beach of Falassarna, you can explore the remains of the ancient Minoan city, beautifully set in a coastal landscape.

Chrysoskalitissa Monastery
Built on a rocky hill overlooking the sea, this historic monastery is located near Elafonissi and offers both spiritual atmosphere and breathtaking views.

Gonia Monastery (Kolymbari)
An important religious and historical site, known for its strong role in Cretan resistance movements throughout history.

Agioi Apostoloi (Chania)
A small seaside chapel set in a peaceful park, perfect for an afternoon stroll or watching the sunset.

Local Flavors

Cretan Cuisine
Enjoy fresh, home-style dishes in traditional tavernas. We recommend Grambousa Taverna in Kaliviani, famous for its authentic recipes and stunning sunset views, and Akrogiali in Kissamos, where you can taste fresh fish right by the sea.

Wine
Crete has one of the oldest wine traditions in Europe. Around Kissamos you will find well-known wineries such as Pnevmatikakis Winery and Anoskeli, where you can enjoy guided tours and tastings of local red, white, and sweet wines.

Olive Oil
Olive oil is at the heart of Cretan life. In the Kissamos area, many family-owned olive mills and estates open their doors to visitors, offering tours and tastings of extra virgin olive oil. This is a unique opportunity to learn about traditional and modern production methods – and of course to taste one of the best olive oils in the world.
